Welcome to 'The Garden City' of New Zealand, the largest city in the South Island and quite often the start and/or finish of your truly memorable holiday through the stunning and unforgetable scenery that the South Island provides you with. Whether you're heading for the uncrowded golden sand beaches of Nelson, the scenic and often wild West Coast, or the spectacular surroundings of Queenstown and Milford Sound, be sure to spend a few days in and around Christchurch either at the start or the end of your holiday.
True to what you may have heard, this city was rocked by the earthquakes of 2010 & 2011, destroying many of the city's historic stone buildings including its iconic Christchurch Cathedral. It was then cut off from the north with the following, nearby Kaikoura earthquake of 2016. But Christchurch, and the surrounding Canterbury region, is rebuilding itself back to its former glory, and the best way we can support this is by spending some time (and some money) with the people & shops/cafes in the city.
